The Parkland Orthopaedics Spine service provides a comprehensive approach to the care and management of spine injuries and conditions. Many of the new technologies and available techniques for modern spine care have been evaluated and used routinely at Parkland.  The Parkland Orthopaedic Spine team offers leading-edge expertise in the evaluation and treatment of a broad range of conditions and injuries that occur at all ages, from young to senior adults.

Services Include

  • Evaluation of spine conditions and injuries in a multidisciplinary modern out-patient clinic
  • Conservative treatments to preserve and /or correct the spine to relieve pain and restore movement
  • Minimally invasive procedures
  • Surgical care of traumatic and degenerative spine conditions
  • Rehabilitation after surgery allowing full functional recovery

Our Orthopaedic Spine team works to create a comprehensive, personalized treatment and rehabilitation plan for patients. In addition to our physicians, our treatment team includes advanced practice nurses, occupational, physical and recreational therapists and social workers.

Meet Parkland's Orthopaedic Spine Specialists

Douglas Dickson, MD specializes intreating spine disorders and complex spinal deformity cases, particularly scoliosis and kyphosis.


Michael Van Hal, MD treats a variety of spine pathologies, including degenerative conditions, acute disc herniations, fractures, and deformities.


Robert Metzger, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC has been specializing in spine care since 2001 and has been serving the Parkland Orthopaedic Spine Clinic since 2007.

He obtained his Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Texas Woman’s University and has been a family nurse practitioner since 2000. He regularly lectures on spine care, in addition to being published in the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the Journal for Nurse Practitioners.
