Rehabilitation
Parkland Burn Rehabilitation
Our goal is to provide comprehensive, evidence-based therapy for our burn patients. We strive to help our patients maximize their potential and independence via individualized patient-centered treatment plans. Burn rehabilitation centers on improving the overall quality of life (physical, emotional, and social) and easing the transition back to home and community.
Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy
At Parkland, our team is composed of Occupational, Physical, and Speech therapists, as well as therapy aides. This group works as an integral part of our inter-disciplinary team. Burn patients benefit from specialized care which is initiated within 24-hours of admission. Our therapy team is staffed daily to support our patient needs. Individual treatment plans are developed and focus on improving a patient’s function and independence in self-care, range of motion, mobility, communication, and swallowing. Our team is specially trained to address the unique needs of the burn patient, including prevention and correction of burn scarring, splinting, and casting needs, pre-prosthetic training, and contracture management. Rehabilitation is available through the continuum of care.

Early Therapy Intervention in the Burn Unit
Immobility can contribute to physical deconditioning, increased hospital length of stay, and post-discharge complications. Our skilled team of Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapists help to individualize plans for the patient’s progress. Early mobilization has been proven to help with secretion management, respiratory support, skin-integrity issues, and overall improved treatment outcomes. Our group of specialty-trained therapists incorporate principles of early mobilization to achieve improved outcomes for our burn population. Addressing swallowing and communication concerns are also part of our early intervention program.
