Educational Mission

Our Parkland Ethics Committee’s education mission is to inform the entire Parkland community - patients, families, staff - about ethical concerns in health care. We have four primary mechanisms for this:

UT Southwestern ethics grand rounds

Parkland helps support the UT Southwestern Ethics Grand Rounds program, which offers monthly scholarly lectures on important issues in bioethics and medical ethics for the entire UT Southwestern/Parkland community. The series is offered on the second Tuesday of the month from noon-1 p.m., from September through May each academic year. You can read more about ethics grand rounds, including the current lecture schedule, online. You can also view past ethics grand rounds lectures.

Parkland online learning for patients, families, and staff

Our Parkland Ethics Committee partners with Parkland departments, services, and administration to develop online teaching modules for staff, as well as educational media for patients and families.

Nursing and physician in-services

We deliver workshops and lectures to various Parkland clinical services focusing on challenging ethical issues in healthcare delivery.

Ethics consultation

Our fundamental task in giving expert consultation on medical ethics is educating stakeholders about policy, law, and procedures; clarifying values among various stakeholders; helping all in the Parkland community utilize appropriate resources for problem-solving; and helping clinicians develop skills in working with patients and families facing confusing or difficult clinical situations. Anyone can request an ethics consultation.
