Community Outreach and Burn Prevention
The Parkland Burn Team is committed to reducing the number of deaths and injuries caused by fires through education and demonstrations. A program can be designed to address injuries to children, adolescents or adults, or tailored for people in high-risk professions such as line workers or power plant employees. Presentations can take place at health fairs, open houses or schools. Basic burn safety, smoke detectors and evacuation planning are just a few of the topics that can be covered. All handouts and other materials are provided free of charge.

Safety tips:
- Check smoke alarms monthly and make sure you have one in every room of your house
- Practice a fire drill on a yearly basis and make an outside meeting point to rejoin with family members
Cooking safety:
- Remain in the kitchen when cooking
- Have a lid easily accessible to smother a grease fire
- Have a fire extinguisher handy and know how to use it
- Never use water on grease fire as it will cause the fire to spread faster and further
- Create a 3 foot “no kid” zone around your stove or simply keep children out of the kitchen you are cooking

Prevent scald burns:
- Set hot water heater to 120°F or medium setting
- Check bath water prior to getting in the tub, it should not be more than 100°F
- Remain with children while they bath
- Keep hot drinks away from the edge of tables and children
