How to perform a breast self-exam
10/30/2020
Life can get busy, but you’re never too busy to take a moment to check on your health. A monthly, at-home breast exam is just one of the many ways you can keep track of any changes with your body. Along with your regular mammogram, monthly breast self-exams allow you to check for a difference in skin texture, bumps or changes in your breasts. Follow these steps on how to perform a breast self-exam in the comfort of your home.
- First, lie down on your bed.
- Place your right hand behind your head. With the middle fingers of your left hand, gently yet firmly press down using small motions to examine the entire right breast.
- Next, sit or stand. Feel your armpit, because breast tissue goes into that area.
- Gently squeeze the nipple, checking for discharge. Repeat the process on the left breast.
